October 29, 2025Deep Network Observability
Introduction
In today's rapidly evolving network landscape, innovation is the key to staying ahead. Building on the trusted foundation of our earlier releases, including the Telco-focused R2.1, we are proud to introduce Aviz Service Node (ASN) Release 2.2.
This new version goes beyond being a simple update. It reimagines how enterprise and telco networks operate, offering enhanced performance, precision, and deep visibility into real network behavior.
What's New in Aviz Service Node 2.2
In Release 2.2, we have strengthened our platform to deliver greater value, reliability, and performance. Below are the major highlights:
- Cplane Handover / Switching: Ensures smooth subscriber session continuity when users move between 4G (EPC) and 5G (Core) networks.
- KPI - Packet Loss and Jitter: Provides precise measurements for TCP Packet Loss and TCP/UDP Jitter, offering end-to-end visibility into user experience.
- ASN on NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPU: Enables standalone Subscriber-Aware Load Balancing (SALB) using P4 programmable datapath, achieving up to 400 Gbps performance.
- ASN on NVIDIA ConnectX NIC: Expands support to NVIDIA ConnectX NICs, enabling DPDK-accelerated, high-throughput packet processing.
- ASN Next-Gen Deep Packet Inspection (DPI): Introduces a new DPI engine for deeper, more accurate traffic analysis beyond header-only inspection.
- ASN DPI Dynamic Upgrade: Supports in-service DPI upgrades for easy integration of new DPI libraries.
- ASN KPI Active Communication: Adds KPI Active Communication support in Data Center Mode for byte and time duration threshold-based KPI computations.
Cplane Handover and Switching
As mobile operators transition from 4G to 5G, one of their biggest challenges is maintaining consistent Control Plane visibility across Radio Access Technologies (RATs).
The Aviz Service Node bridges this visibility gap by acting as a passive, observability-driven mediation layer. It maintains continuous and correlated session tracking across EPC and 5GC interfaces, enabling seamless 4G to 5G handover insights without requiring live network reconfiguration.
ASN automatically detects handovers between EPC and 5GC through IMSI-based session matching. It performs in-place session upgrade logic, maintaining a unified subscriber view throughout the transition. During each handover, ASN dynamically updates metadata exports to Kafka, reflecting real-time information such as RAT type, user type, IP, and TEIDs. This ensures that analytics and monitoring systems always receive synchronized, up-to-date session data.
KPI: Packet Loss and Jitter
In both Telco and IP networks, consistent application performance depends on understanding packet reliability and latency behavior.
Aviz Service Node measures TCP Packet Loss and TCP/UDP Jitter to provide end-to-end visibility into user experience. These insights are essential for diagnosing throughput degradation, latency spikes, and congestion-related issues that traditional counters might miss.
ASN computes TCP Packet Loss by passively analyzing mirrored traffic flows. It tracks TCP sequence numbers, retransmissions, and acknowledgment gaps to determine lost packets accurately.
This analysis is correlated with session metadata such as IP addresses, VLANs, QoS tags, and tunnel identifiers like GTP in Telco or VXLAN/GRE in data center environments. Such correlation helps engineers identify exactly where loss occurs, between RAN and Core or between leaf and spine nodes in a data center.
Similarly, TCP/UDP Jitter is computed by evaluating inter-packet timestamp variations, providing real-time insights into delay fluctuations for both connection-oriented and connectionless traffic streams.
ASN on NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPU
In Telco networks, operators handle massive subscriber traffic while ensuring optimal performance and accurate metadata extraction. Subscriber traffic includes control packets such as GTP-C, PFCP, and N11, and user packets like GTP-U. These are often processed separately in the core, complicating correlation.
Aviz Service Node introduces Subscriber-Aware Load Balancing (SALB), running standalone on the NVIDIA BlueField-3 (BF3) DPU. This feature uses a P4 programmable datapath and embedded ARM cores to deliver peak performance, ensuring correlated traffic reaches the right monitoring tools efficiently.
With ASN SALB on BF3 DPU now generally available, operators can achieve high-speed, intelligent traffic processing for next-generation Telco networks.
ASN on NVIDIA ConnectX NIC
Modern networks across Telco, enterprise, and edge require flexible, high-performance packet intelligence to keep pace with AI-driven workloads.
Aviz Service Node offers a software-defined solution for advanced traffic analytics, application identification, and AI-powered insights on commodity servers.
Release 2.2 introduces support for NVIDIA ConnectX NICs, expanding beyond x86 compatibility. With ConnectX, ASN leverages NVIDIA's advanced networking technology to deliver exceptional throughput, low latency, and scalability.
From 4G/5G traffic correlation to real-time flow tracing, ASN on ConnectX enables network operators to modernize observability and performance analysis seamlessly.
ASN Next-Gen Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)
The new ASN Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) engine provides accurate identification of over 2,700 applications and 9,000 subcategories by analyzing traffic payloads.
This level of detail allows organizations to identify exactly which applications are active, including video, audio, gaming, file transfer, or chat, along with their associated protocols.
With this insight, enterprises and Telcos can apply tailored policies for security, bandwidth allocation, and compliance. By understanding both applications and their categories, teams can optimize performance, enforce policies, and gain deeper visibility into user behavior and network trends.
ASN DPI Dynamic Upgrade
In today's fast-evolving environment, new applications and protocols emerge frequently. A static DPI engine quickly becomes outdated.
ASN-DPI solves this challenge with a dynamic upgrade mechanism, allowing its detection engine and protocol signature database to be updated on the fly. These updates occur without service interruption or full software redeployment, ensuring continuous adaptability and efficiency.
Conclusion
With Aviz Service Node Release 2.2, Aviz Networks is raising the bar for performance, intelligence, and flexibility in modern networks.
By combining seamless mobility, advanced KPI visibility, deep DPI capabilities, and expanded hardware support, this release empowers operators to deliver carrier-grade performance with enterprise-level efficiency.
